What a side hustle really pays, per hour, after everything.

Tab: Side Hustle Math / Row 5

Most effective side hustles, ranked by after-tax pay per hour

Side hustles ranked by what's left per hour after platform fees, 76¢ mileage and self-employment tax. Car delivery at the low end leaves about $7.77.

published= read=12min

The most effective side hustles are skilled freelancing on a low-fee platform, at a rate you can actually sell, and app delivery in places with a legal pay floor such as New York City. An hour of ordinary car delivery at the low end of Amazon Flex’s own pay range leaves about $7.77 after vehicle costs and tax. Any other hustle has to beat that.

The numbers

Benchmark: one hour of car deliveryValue
Gross per hour$18.00
Costs per hour$7.60
Net per hour$10.40
Net after tax (estimate)$7.77

Assumptions: the gross figure is the low end of Amazon’s own claim that “most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour” (Amazon Flex). Costs are 10 business miles per hour at the IRS rate of 76 cents a mile (IRB 2026-29). Tax is 15.3% self-employment tax (IRS) plus an assumed 10% for income tax. Everything is rounded to the cent.

Why a delivery hour is the yardstick

Food delivery is one of the most common side hustles, and Amazon Flex is one of the few platforms that publishes an hourly pay claim. Most “best side hustle” lists quote hourly ranges with no source. Amazon’s $18 to $25 is at least the company’s own figure, so it works as a baseline.

The ranking below is not about what a hustle could pay. It’s about what is left per hour once fees, running costs and tax are gone.

What most people actually earn

In the Bankrate side hustle survey (2,616 adults, June 2025):

  • 27% of US adults had a side hustle, the lowest share since 2017.
  • Median earnings were $200 a month. The average was $885, pulled up by a small group of high earners.
  • 28% earned between $1 and $50 a month.
  • The most common hustles were online sales (15%), professional or business services (14%), food delivery (9%), crafts (9%) and pet care (7%).

BLS counted 9.0 million multiple jobholders in September 2026, which is 5.5% of everyone employed.

The median is the honest benchmark. When a hustle is advertised at “up to” some hourly figure, compare it with $200 a month, not with the headline.

Assumptions

Swap in your own numbers for any of these:

  1. Car costs use the IRS business mileage rate of 76 cents a mile, which applies to miles driven from 1 July 2026. Treat it as a stand-in for fuel, wear, insurance and depreciation together. Your real cost per mile may be higher or lower.
  2. Miles: 10 business miles per paid hour of car delivery.
  3. Self-employment tax: 15.3% on all net earnings. This slightly overstates the bill, because the IRS lets you deduct the employer-equivalent half when working out adjusted gross income.
  4. Income tax: an assumed 10% of net. Your federal bracket and your state will move this.
  5. Tips: left out unless stated, so tipped work does a little better than shown.
  6. Freelance rate: a hypothetical $40 per billed hour. It’s an illustration, not a typical rate.
  7. After-tax factor: 1 − 0.153 − 0.10 = 0.747. Every after-tax figure below is net × 0.747.

The freelance rows are at the top only because they use an assumed rate. They show how much the platform fee costs you, not what a beginner will earn. If you can’t sell an hour at $40, those rows drop.

Car delivery

Working for the opening table:

  • Gross: $18.00
  • Miles: 10 × $0.76 = $7.60
  • Net: $18.00 − $7.60 = $10.40
  • Self-employment tax: $10.40 × 0.153 = $1.59
  • Income tax (assumed): $10.40 × 0.10 = $1.04
  • After tax: $10.40 − $1.59 − $1.04 = $7.77

At the top of Amazon’s range: $25.00 − $7.60 = $17.40 net, and $17.40 × 0.747 = $13.00 after tax.

DoorDash doesn’t publish an hourly figure. Its pay page gives base pay of $2 to $10+ per offer in Earn per Offer mode. Earn by Time instead guarantees a minimum hourly rate for active time. Dashers keep 100% of tips. The full breakdown for that app is in Is DoorDash worth it? Driver math after gas, wear and tax.

Delivery and rideshare under a pay floor

In three places a legal minimum moves the math more than any app setting:

  • New York City: app delivery workers (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Instacart, Shipt, Amazon Flex and others) must be paid at least $22.13 an hour before tips from 1 April 2026. That’s $22.13 × 0.747 = $16.53 after tax, before vehicle costs. Whether you deliver by car or bike, subtract your own running costs from that figure.
  • California (Prop 22): at least 120% of the local minimum wage for engaged time, plus $0.37 a mile in 2026, checked over 14-day periods. At the state minimum of $16.90: 1.2 × $16.90 = $20.28, plus 10 × $0.37 = $3.70, gives $23.98. Take off 10 × $0.76 = $7.60 in costs and you have $16.38, or $12.24 after tax. Only engaged time is paid at this rate. Waiting between orders isn’t, so your pay per logged-in hour will be lower. On top of that come health stipends of $867 a quarter (15 to 24 hours a week) or $1,737 a quarter (25+ hours). If your city’s minimum wage is higher than the state’s, the floor is higher too.
  • Minnesota rideshare: through 2026, at least $1.28 a mile plus $0.31 a minute, with a $5 minimum per trip. For a 10-mile, 20-minute trip: 10 × $1.28 + 20 × $0.31 = $12.80 + $6.20 = $19.00. From 1 January 2027 the rates are $1.33, $0.32 and $5.20, so the same trip pays $13.30 + $6.40 = $19.70. Tips don’t count toward the minimum. The floor is a minimum payment, not a cost allowance: at the IRS rate, those 10 miles alone cost $7.60.

On Prolific, researchers must pay participants at least $8 an hour and are advised to pay $12. You need no car, no supplies and no mileage, so the whole amount is net before tax: $5.98 to $8.96 an hour after tax. The limit is how many studies you’re offered, and that varies. If you spend 30 minutes looking for studies for every hour you complete, the $12 rate drops to $8.96 ÷ 1.5 = $5.97 across your total time. Freelancing

This is the only category where you set the price, so the platform fee is the number to compare:

PlatformFee to youKept from $100 billed
Fiverrflat 20%$80
Upworkvariable 0 to 15%, set when the contract starts$85 to $100
Upwork Direct Contracts5% (0% for Freelancer Plus)$95 to $100

At an assumed $40 an hour: on Fiverr, $40 × 0.80 = $32.00, then $32.00 × 0.747 = $23.90. On Upwork at the highest fee, $40 × 0.85 = $34.00, which is $25.40 after tax. Proposals, messages and revisions aren’t billed, so divide by your total hours, not just the billed ones.

Pet sitting

Rover charges sitters a 20% service fee in most of the US, so on a $100 booking you keep $80 before tax, or $80 × 0.747 = $59.76 after. California works differently: owners pay a 25% fee plus an 11% booking fee. Rover and Wag both require you to be 18+ and pass a background check. Your hourly rate depends on your prices and on the travel time between homes, which nobody pays for.

Selling on Etsy

Etsy’s fees stack. Take a $20 item with $5 shipping, $25 in total. We assume the payment processing fee applies to the full order, as the transaction fee does:

  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% × $25 = $1.625
  • Processing fee: 3% × $25 + $0.25 = $1.00
  • Total fees: $2.825, rounded to $2.83, or 11.3% of the order

That leaves $25.00 − $2.83 = $22.17, and $5 of it goes on postage. Materials and your making time come out after that. A sale that came through Etsy’s Offsite Ads carries a further 15% fee. Shops can opt out of the ads until they reach $10,000 in sales in any 365-day period. After that the fee becomes 12%, you can’t opt out, and it’s capped at $100 per order.

TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit charges a one-time, non-refundable $25 registration fee, and paying it doesn’t guarantee you’ll be approved. You also need to be 18+, have an SSN, a checking account and a smartphone, pass a background and ID check, and live in a city where TaskRabbit operates. There’s no official typical-pay figure to plug in, so TaskRabbit isn’t ranked. Count the $25 as a cost your first jobs have to earn back.

Worked example: a month of evening delivery

We assume 8 hours a week for 4 weeks, at the low end of Amazon’s range, driving 10 miles an hour:

  • Hours: 8 × 4 = 32
  • Gross: 32 × $18.00 = $576.00
  • Miles: 320 × $0.76 = $243.20
  • Net: $576.00 − $243.20 = $332.80
  • Self-employment tax: $332.80 × 0.153 = $50.92
  • Income tax (assumed): $332.80 × 0.10 = $33.28
  • Take-home: $248.60, or $7.77 an hour

That beats the $200 Bankrate median, though not by much for 32 hours of driving. For miles driven before 1 July 2026 the IRS rate was 72.5 cents, so the same 320 miles would have been worth 320 × $0.725 = $232.00 as a deduction.

Repeat that month for a year and you have 12 × $332.80 = $3,993.60 net. The tax is $611.02 + $399.36 = $1,010.38. That’s over the $1,000 mark at which estimated tax payments become required, unless the withholding from your day job already covers it.

The 2026 tax rules that change the number

Many side hustle guides are out of date on these. From the IRS gig work page and related IRS releases:

  • Filing: you must file once net self-employment earnings reach $400, and you must report all gig income even if no 1099 arrives. The forms are 1040, Schedule C and Schedule SE.
  • Form 1099-K is only issued once payments pass $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions. Form 1099-NEC/MISC thresholds rose from $600 to $2,000 for tax years beginning after 2025. Fewer forms doesn’t mean less tax.
  • Mileage: 72.5 cents a mile for 1 January to 30 June 2026, and 76 cents from 1 July.
  • No tax on tips: a deduction of up to $25,000 a year for 2025 to 2028, phasing out above $150,000 modified AGI ($300,000 joint). Listed occupations include taxi and rideshare drivers (802), goods delivery people (804), pet caretakers (506), home maintenance and repair workers (401), and entertainers and performers, which covers digital content creators (208). The tips must appear on a 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC or 1099-K, and the deduction can’t be more than the net income of the business that earned them. Specified service fields such as law, health and consulting are excluded.
  • Equipment: vehicles or computers acquired after 19 January 2025 and used more than 50% for business can be fully written off in the first year.
  • Estimated taxes: due if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. You avoid the penalty by paying the smaller of 90% of this year’s tax or 100% of last year’s (higher earners face a different rule). The next payment is due 15 January 2027.

This is general arithmetic, not tax advice. If your situation has more than one moving part, a tax professional is worth the fee.

What changes the answer

  • Miles per hour: each extra mile costs $0.76 before tax, about $0.57 after. At 5 miles an hour the $18 benchmark rises to $10.61 after tax. At 15 miles an hour it falls to $4.93.
  • Unpaid time: waiting for orders, driving to pickups, searching for studies and pitching clients all take time. Divide by all the time you spend, not just the paid part.
  • Tips: DoorDash passes on 100%, and tips may be deductible under the tips rule. They are the biggest upside in delivery work.
  • Cash-out fees: DoorDash’s daily Fast Pay costs $1.99, which is 3.3% of a $60 day. Weekly payout is free.
  • Who can sign up: DoorDash’s minimum age is 18 in most states, 19 in 13 states (including Arizona, Florida, New Jersey and Texas) and 21 for new applicants in California. Amazon Flex requires 21+. Uber requires at least 1 year of licensed US driving, or 3 years if you’re under 25. Instacart shoppers must be 18+ and able to lift 40 lb. Check the rules for your state before you count on any of these.

Compared with minimum wage

OptionGross per hourAfter tax (est.)
California minimum wage job$16.90$13.92
NYC delivery floor (before vehicle costs)$22.13$16.53
California Prop 22 (engaged hour)$23.98$12.24
Prolific, recommended rate$12.00$8.96
Amazon Flex, low end$18.00$7.77

An employee pays only half the Social Security and Medicare tax (7.65%, half of 15.3%), because the employer pays the rest. The working is $16.90 − (16.90 × 0.0765 = $1.29) − (16.90 × 0.10 = $1.69) = $13.92. A W-2 job also costs you nothing in mileage. Hour for hour, an ordinary part-time job beats unprotected car delivery at the low end of the range. Wage options that need no experience are compared in Best paying part-time jobs, no experience: $15 to $21.53 an hour.

Check for scams before starting

A side hustle that costs you money is the least effective of all. The FTC recorded 3 million fraud reports and $15.9 billion in reported losses in 2025. Task scams follow a pattern: they pay you $5 to $20 first, then ask you to deposit your own money, often in crypto. The FTC’s rules of thumb are simple: never pay to get paid, and nobody legitimately pays you to “like” or rate things. Ignore job offers that arrive by unexpected text, WhatsApp or Telegram, and report them at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Be wary of “up to” pay claims too. The FTC returned $6.7 million to 98,254 people after Arise Virtual Solutions advertised remote work at “up to $18/hour”. A legitimate one-time fee, like TaskRabbit’s $25, is disclosed on the company’s own help pages. It doesn’t come from a stranger in a chat.

Verdict in one number

$7.77 an hour. That’s what an hour of car delivery at the low end of Amazon’s range leaves after costs and tax, and any side hustle has to beat it before it can be called effective.
